Homespun Wisdom Brings Troops Home to a Healing Hug
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March, 2009, Glen Ridge, NJ: Certified Life Coach and radio show host, Julia Roberts, interviews GR8Moms on work/life balance. Her recent show was entitled : Warring Loyalties/How Military Families Cope. Michelle Obama has stated that military families are her top priority as First Lady and Congress has just designated 2009 as the year of the Military Family.
Her radio show guest was military mom Catherine Roberts and the founder and director of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. (QOVF.org). The foundation seeks to cover every returning wounded combat veteran â€" whether physically or psychologically wounded â€" with a handmade quilt of valor. Since its inception in 2003, the QOVF has awarded quilts â€" made voluntarily by patriotic American quilters â€" to over 21,000 returning troops. The wounded service member generally receives the quilt in a ceremony, performed in bases, military hospitals by commanding officers, or medical personnel overseas and at home.
Each quilt carries the following tag: (SEE PHOTO.)
PRESCRIPTION: To ease a wounded spirit
SYMPTOMS: war weary, wounded body, mind or heart
REMEDY: A Quilt of Valor. Each stitch is a caress. Each quilt is created with love, prayers and thank-you's.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Wrap tightly around yourself and feel the love and support of a grateful nation.
Said Catherine Roberts:
“These quilts heal a soldier, sailor or marine in a place he or she didn’t even know was wounded. The gratitude, love and beauty sewn in â€" stitch by stitch â€" the comfort, warmth and well wishes quilted together make these wartime quilts a very important gift for these warriors. It’s a legacy gift and a physical reminder of what their service to country meant to a stranger, a patriot and countryman.”
?
Julia Roberts’ show highlighted “creative” ways for military families to cope while their loved ones are deployed. According to the 2005 NEA study, “Art as a Healing Force,” creative endeavors are beneficial for relieving stress â€" for both creators (activity relieves stress) and appreciators (beauty restores a sense of identity). Quilts of Valor help quilters express a nation’s gratitude, and combat veterans heal.
