Math Teachers Learn New Strategies at NCTM Annual Meeting, Washington, D.C., April 22â€"25
WHO: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
Local Hosts: District of Columbia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics
WHEN: April 22â€"25, 2009
WHAT: NCTM's Annual Meeting and Exposition, "Equity: All Means ALL," will offer more than 800 sessions and workshops, covering all levels, pre-Kâ€"grade 12. Presenters during the four-day conference will come from many of the region’s schools and universities. Other presentations will be given by educators from throughout the United States and Canada, and as far away as Queensland, Australia, and Taiwan, on topics ranging from developing algebraic thinking to linking research to practice, and teaching math through children's literature to exploring the complexities of math so that all students will achieve success.
Presentations: Pedro Noguera, a leader in education reform, will present the opening session, "Challenging Racial Inequity in Our Schools," on Wednesday evening, April 22, 5:30â€"7:00 p.m. In his presentation, Noguera will tackle the problems of race, vouchers, and violence in our nation’s schools and present solutions that can bring equity in education to all.
On Thursday, a full day of Learn and Reflect sessions is designed to help teachers recognize and change inequitable policies and practices in their classrooms and schools. The kick-off session, “Equity: The Most Important and Challenging Issue Facing Our Schools and Society,” is at 9:30 a.m. in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Of special interest on Friday is a strand aimed at meeting the specific needs of the new teacher. Nearly 50 percent of new teachers leave the profession within the first five years, and at 16.4 percent, the turnover in math is the highest of all subject areas. Retaining the next generation of math teachers is essential if we are to fill the 280,000 new positions in math and science that are projected by 2015.
WHERE: Conference activities will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the Grand Hyatt Washington and the Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel.
Registration: Attendees may register on site in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (East Registration) on Wednesday, April 22, 8:00 a.m.â€"6:00 p.m.; Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24, 7:00 a.m.â€"4:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 25, 7:00 a.m.â€"10:00 a.m.
Exhibits: More than 225 mathematics education exhibitors will showcase their latest products in Exhibit Hall D/E at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Thursday, April 23, 8:30 a.m.â€"5:00 p.m.; Friday, April 24, 8:30 a.m.â€"5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 25, 9:00 a.m.â€"12:00 noon.
WHY: To facilitate an exchange of ideas among mathematics educators on how students learn mathematics and the best teaching practices, thus enabling teachers to return to their classrooms better prepared to teach mathematics to all students.
